Coated paper is a paper that has been impressed with a gloss, semi-gloss or matte coating agent. This agent is usually applied on the paper and then rolled to polish the paper and fill all gaps and pits between the paper fibres and make the surface smooth and more uniformly reflective and less absorbent. This improves the brightness, smoothness and other printing properties like reduced ink bleeding and provides a bright, uniform and crisp print. For complex artworks and crisp prints of photographs and artworks on smaller surfaces like paper cups, coated paper is the way to go.
Uncoated Paper is the paper with its natural grains and roughness exposed since no coating agent has been applied on it, and is most suitable for vintage prints and books like novels where crispness of text is not what is expected. In cases of entirely written books like novels and stories, uncoated paper and its softened print is what is preferred since softer text prints are less stressful to the eyes and are better for longer reading durations.
