Which Paper Cups are Microwaves Safe?

Are paper cups microwave safeMicrowaving is an excellent way to warm or heat your beverages quickly. You can have your coffee hot and ready to drink again in a few minutes. If you’re using paper cups, you’ll wonder whether it’s safe for microwaving. The truth is, while microwaves can be handy, there are many caveats to using them.

Are Paper Cups Microwaves Safe?

According to Samsung, the leading Microwaves maker, paper cups are one of the items suitable for microwave cooking. Samsung points out that paper cups allow microwaves into the drink. Bob Schiffmann, President of the International Microwave Power Institute, also alluded that paper cups are microwaving safe. He says, “Paper is OK for microwaving as long it’s the right paper.”

According to Bob, the only papers that are not microwave-safe are newspapers and brown paper bags. He pointed out that newspapers aren’t sanitary while brown paper bags can’t withstand heat.

Why Isn’t It Safe to Microwave Some Paper Cups?

You’ve got to be cautious about microwaving paper cups. This is because of the vast differences between available paper cups.

Differences Based on the Type of Paper Cup

There are two kinds of paper cups: those made for hot beverages and cold ones.

Single-Walled Paper Cups

Single-walled paper cups are made of a single layer of coating, making them ideal for cold drinks. It would be best to use paper sleeves when serving hot coffee in these coffee cups.

The role of paper sleeves is to protect your fingers from the heat emanating from your coffee. They are worth it when your cup’s walling is too weak to provide ample insulation.

A single-wall paper cup is much more helpful in dine-in scenarios. This is when you’re not in a hurry to leave or don’t need to take away your coffee to enjoy it comfortably.

If you put a single-wall paper cup into a microwave, your cup may warp. It may become pliable, and your beverage may spill all over. In some cases, it might melt and create a big mess, especially if it’s made of substandard boards.

We think that it’s not safe to microwave coffee in single-wall paper cups. These coffee cups may not be able to withstand a lot of heat and will quickly get flimsy in a microwave.

A single-paper cup is suitable for a quick or cold drink. These paper cups are often useful for cold-pressed juice parlours or cold brews. Most of these are single-use cups that you discard after drinking your coffee.

Paper Cups for Hot Drinks (Double-Wall Paper Cups)

If you want to serve takeaway coffee, it’s best to use paper cups for hot drinks. These cups are coated with a double layer to prevent heat loss and keep your beverages warm for up to three hours.

Paper cups for hot drinks are also popularly known as double-walled paper cups. Many people instinctively use double-wall paper cups to microwave their beverages.

One of the best things about double-wall paper cups is their resilience. The best ones are sturdy, durable and reusable. The double insulation shields your fingers, keeps your coffee warm, and allows microwaving.

Differences Based on Materials Used

Determining whether your paper cups are microwaveable is one thing; knowing the dangers of microwaving your beverage in a paper cup is another.

Many paper cups are usually bonded with thin films and glues to prevent leaking. These films and adhesives may contain chemicals entering your drink during heating.

Make sure your paper cup’s film is made of PLA to stay on the safe side. PLA is a safe, eco-friendly coating. It originates from corn starch which is chemical free.

On the other hand, if you microwave coffee in a PE-coated paper cup, you’re risking harming your health. PE releases chemicals that may have adverse health effects.

Are there Microwave Friendly Paper Cups?

Yes. Microwave-friendly paper cups are double-wall paper cups made of food-grade safe materials. These paper cups comprise a sturdy corn-starch coating that can withstand moderate microwave heat.

How to Microwave Paper Cups Safely

So, suppose you’re in your office or house. Unfortunately, you were too tied up or tired to drink your takeaway coffee in time. It’s cold and undesirable, and the only thing you can think about is to nuke it.

Before you do anything, check out the following tips.

Consider your Options

If you’re at home or in the office, there’s probably a much safer microwavable container lying around.

It’s always safer to grab a mug or a glass for microwave cooking. This is a necessary safety precaution, regardless of whether your coffee cup is microwave safe.

Prepare to Microwave Your Coffee Cup

  • Check labels to confirm that your coffee cup is microwaving safe. Make sure it’s a double-wall paper cup coated with an annealed PLA. Annealed PLA is sturdy, more robust and highly resistant to heat. Beyond that, PLA-lined paper cups like the 100% biodegradable paper cups are microwave safe. PLA is also made of organic fibres, essentially safer than plastic(PE) films.
  • Remove the lid, especially if it’s a plastic lid. Not all plastics are safe for microwave cooking.
  • Set the microwave heating level to medium and time it to one minute.

Are You Looking for Microwave Safe Paper Cups?

In a nutshell, it’s dangerous to microwave your paper cup if you’re unsure about its quality. Consider the type of paperboard and coating for your paper cups before microwaving.

The good news; you have many other options for heating your coffee. You can use known microwave-safe containers such as ceramics. Or look for microwave-safe paper cups.

For safety purposes, manufacturers may mark some paper cups “microwave safe”. This is to help you avoid guessing your options when looking for paper cups.

Just make sure you read the labelling on your paper cup before microwaving. You’re good to go if your packaging or cup has a microwave-safe symbol.

Remember, it’s not common for all vendors to state whether their paper cups are microwave safe. So, rather than assume, find out more about the safety of your coffee cups with your manufacturer.
